Did I pass my Norwegian exam?

Hello!…Thank you for stopping by to read what I have in store again. It’s been a while since I sat down to write, maybe not for a blog. A lot has happened during those periods, and I will share them with you. This summer, I registered for Norskprøve (Norwegian language exam) at the A2B1 level. The first exam was muntlig (oral exam), and I remembered arriving exactly at 9:45 am. As soon as I arrived, the exam started immediately because the two other candidates, the examiner, and the sensor, were waiting for me. Luckily, I knew the other candidates well as we were classmates in Norwegian language class. The familiarity relaxed me as I saw it as having a usual conversation with people I am used to speaking with. To make things more relaxing, the examiner, who asked questions, started by telling each of us to talk about ourselves. After that, the examiner told us to give our opinions on a topic and back to individual questions. I thought that was all, but the examiner asked just me some follow-up questions. While she gave me a book and a pen, she told me to take my time to think and write about it. I was scared because I wasn’t exactly sure if it was a good or bad sign, but I saw it as a challenge and opportunity to do better than I had done before. After speaking for over 20 minutes, my energy began to reduce as it takes a lot of energy to speak a new language.

The next day was the writing, listening, and reading exam, which started at 9 am. The reading went well because I enjoy reading. Things did not go well for my listening because we all started with reading followed by listening, a break, and writing. There were a few noises in the background, which I won’t go into detail about it. Despite all odds, I finished the listening and the writing part.

The result came out some weeks ago, and guess how I performed??. I will start by explaining the different levels of the Norwegian language. Grade A1 is the minimum, followed by A2, B1, B2, and C1. Grad B2 and C1 are the top levels and almost everyone’s goal. The B2 level is the minimum level required for a bachelor’s degree in a Norwegian University because the language of use is Norwegian. I would assume that you are done guessing. I had B2 in listening (I was shocked because I was not too sure it went well). Also, B2 in speaking, B1 in reading, and B1 in writing. So, I will share my further goals for my Norwegian language skill with you guys.

Feel free to comment and share what topics you would like me to write about.

Pinnekjøtt is a traditional Norwegian dish based on lamb ribs. The word “Pinne” and “kjøtt” translate to wood and meat in English. I guess me and you are wondering why there is wood in the name. I am guessing it is because of the wood many people use as a kind of steam grate in the pot during the cooking process. Pinnekjøtt is a food enjoyed during Christmas with families and friends.

There were a lot of uncertainties around the making for me. First, it was the type of meat to buy as there are several types sold in the supermarket ranging from smoked to unsmoked. Thanks to the help of my friends, I was able to figure out the smoked type tastes better. While in the shop, I noticed they had several soaking hours as I needed to cook it the next day. The meat has to be soaked for several hours depending on the manufacturer’s instruction. This is because the mat has been preserved with a lot of salt and cannot be cooked immediately. So, I soaked for a night and changed the water three times.

I opted to used potatoes rather than the woods to steam the meat because I planned to eat potatoes as the side. The cooking time requires you to be patient as it takes so long to cook, probably 2 hours. But, it was worth the wait and effort in the end. I added chilli to spice it up. Feel free to drop a message if you would like to get my recipe.

Norway has majorly government-funded universities and the few private uni. are also funded by the government. There are opportunities to do an international master’s programme in English while bachelors are mostly in Norwegian. Getting admission into Norwegian universities for masters is highly competitive and requires you to not just have good grades but also related work experience, and have the funds to sponsor yourself. Did I miss to mention that Norway is a VERY expensive country from housing to food, so be fully financially ready for this journey?.

Do you need an agent? No. Norwegian University admission process is very easy to follow through and all the information to guide you through the application is provided on the university website. Applications for international applicants generally opens in October and close in December. In case you are considering applying, I would advise that this is the best time to familiarize yourself with the requirements to start preparing your documents and gathering your relevant work experience.

Beware that you might need a google translator to digest some of the contents here. Like some of you all know, I live in Oslo, Norway, the cold land! 😊. The official language here is “norsk” in Norwegian even though the majority of Norwegians can speak English. I started learning Norsk in 2021 right from the elementary (A1) level class and am currently in a B1 level class. I can say personally say that it’s been a journey, det er ikke bare bare!. There are 5 levels of the language from A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1. The lowest level is A1 and the highest level is C2, however, the minimum to getting into a Norwegian University to study in the native language is B2 level. Getting into a Norwegian company or your dream job requires one to speak at B2 level, now you can see I have to buckle up my shoes and tenker på norsk hver gang 😊.

I have two upcoming exams this year, social studies and the Norwegian test. I hope I pass them! Wish me, luck guys.

Kindly drop a message on what you would like me to write about. Looking forward to your suggestions.
